Champions of Lough Devnaree Fencing Tourney
This tourney format is designed to give as much fencing as possible to all participants, while aiming to determine the best fencer on the day. It will be held in two stages: a seeding round and then a number of direct elimination rounds.
The seeding round is set out by taking all fighters entered onto the list and splitting them into different seeds. The plan is to make each seeding group of four participants. The fencers will be assigned a number by the order of which they entered the list. A seeding round is fought by single sword with each fighter taking part in one match against all other fighters in their seed. A match consists of three bouts. A double kill counts as a loss for each participant. Wins and Losses will be recorded on a combat tally for each combat, by the overseeing marshal or if available, a list minister. All tallies will be handed to the list mistress when the seeding round is completed.
All tally cards are turned in to the list mistress and a break will be taken until the elimination round is set out. The list mistress computes the totals for each list field and then builds the first round of elimination.
The fighters will be ranked according to their results in the seeding round. This is used to set the matches for the elimination rounds. The highest-scoring fencer from the seeding round will be matched with the lowest-scoring. The second highest-scoring with the second-lowest-scoring, and so on. In case of an odd number a bi-fighter will fight the middle-most ranked fencer.
Direct elimination rounds will now follow. The rounds will be adjusted as each tally card is completed for the previous round and handed to the list mistress upon completion of each match. During elimination each match will consist of five bouts. The first bout will be single rapier; all following bouts will be fought as agreed upon by the participants. If no agreement on weapons can be made within the first minute of meeting on the field then the marshal will
declare the combat single rapier. Double kills count as a loss for both fighters. Should it happen that all five bouts have taken place and no one has won a single bout the participants will both be removed from the tourney. If there
is a tie for wins at the end of the match then the marshal will declare a single rapier combat to first death, refighting all double kills in this case only.
The survivors of elimination round one will be matched in elimination round two according to their number of wins in round one. The highest-scoring will fight the lowest-scoring and so on. In case of equal results, the scores from the seeding round will be used.
This process continues until we have an overall winner. Each elimination round will be of 5 bouts, unless time is pressing overmuch…
My thanks to Hauptmann Wilriech, previously Rapier Protector of Insulae Draconis, for this tourney format.
