Groups in the SCA
The branches of the SCA in Ireland and Northern Ireland, all informally fit into the region of Lough Devnaree. Originally the whole Island was one branch by that name. When we set up new branches around the country we put the name Lough Devnaree aside to cover all the new branches. The basic groups are called ‘Shire’ because the SCA is organised in such a way as to give a feel of being part of medieval kingdoms. A shire is a basic autonomous group within an SCA Kingdom. It can host events, and meetings, and will be kept abreast of developments internationally in the SCA. The European Branch of the SCA is the Kingdom of Drachenwald. It also covers Africa and the Middle East. On the Island of Ireland we have the shires of Eplaheimr (centred around North Tipperary and Offaly), Dun in Mara (Dublin area), Glen Rathlin (Belfast area), and Hrafnsborg (Ballyclare area just north of Belfast). All the branches of Lough Devnaree are part of the Crown Principality of Insulae Draconis, which serves Ireland, Iceland, and the UK. Within the Crown Principality of Insulae Draconis there are Eleven shires, they are:
These shires all support each other and host large events together, such as coronations, and major tournaments. HOW THE SHIRE FITS INTO THE SCA INTERNATIONALLY. The Irish branches are within the SCA Kingdom of Drachenwald which contains around sixty branches as far flung as Cape Town in South Africa, to the Artic Circle in Sweden, and from Finland in the East, to Iceland in the West. Within Drachenwald, there is one principality. It covers all of modern Sweden and has over a dozen shires within it. The Barony of Aarnimetsa in modern Finland has six cantons within it and the Barony of Knights Crossing, in Germany, has one. Outside the Principality and the Baronies, there are more than two dozen shires, and half a dozen or so Strongholds. For details of the SCA on a grander scale click here: The Known World.
